Contest Outline: The Canadian Open is a unique take on the conventional flatland skimboarding contest. Day one is primarily set up to be a lot of fun, creating a more natural skim jam atmosphere but with the twist of having a little money on the line. Day two, is all about stomping those tricks, and the best rider will be given the bragging rights and the big money to take home.

Entry Fees: Money received from riders will go directly back into the contest purse. All participants will receive a bag of goodies (t-shirt, wax, etc) upon payment. Sponsored riders (40 dollars – for two days) and Amateur (20 dollars – for one day).

Prize Purse:  Is completely dictated by the number of sponsors and athletes participating in the event. Our goal is to be able to offer the winner of the sponsored division 1000 dollars along with being able to award cash prizes for each event on day one.

Day One:  Will start off with an amateur event, using heats that narrow down into an eventual final with the top three coming home with the swag.  Women’s competition will run in unison if there are enough entrees, if not they can choose to ride in amateur or the sponsored event. At the completion of this contest starts one of the most unique days of skimboarding that flatland has ever encountered. We are dubbing this as the meet and greet skim jam. So what makes it so unique? The idea is very simple, we will be throwing a skim jam with a variety of cash prized contests throughout the day.  Those who have never participated in a flatland skim jam it is a more pure form of the sport: a bunch of rails, friends, and a chilled atmosphere with little to no pressure. What makes our proposed meet and greet skim jam unique are the optional events throughout the day, giving riders an opportunity to win money, and have a ton of fun:

The Flatland Game of SKIM: those who have ever played HORSE in basketball or SKATE in skateboarding already understand the principal of the game. In simple terms one skimboarder performs a trick then the following skimboarder must perform the same trick, if they fail to do so they are given a letter.  You are out once you have spelt SKIM. We will run this in heats, and narrow down the field to a final.

Best Trick: This is the simplest of the games, a rail is set up in the feature pond, and skimboarders are given a certain time period and whoever is deemed as dropping the best trick within that time period walks away with the money.

Teams of Two: We are really stoked on this event. All participants put their names in a hat. Teams of two are drawn from that hat.  Each team of two, goes through three different timed sections: flatland, ride on, Ollie on. In order to gain a point each team member must land the same trick, consecutively. For example, Bill and Ted are a team. They are placed in the flatland section. Bill starts by landing a shuv. Now ted must land a shuv to gain a point. If he fails then bill must do another shuv and ted has to try to land a shuv again in order to get his team a point. This will be a lot of fun, and the team that best works together will when the money.

Highest Pop:  We will set up an adjustable obstacle in which competitors have to clear and land. Riders are given two attempts at each height or else are eliminated.

Those who do not want to participate in these events will have access to several rails, a barbeque, bocce, etc and will be able to talk with sponsors at their tents, or hangout and watch.

Day Two: Things get a bit more serious with day two; all sponsored riders will be randomly assigned into heats at the beginning of the day. Each heat, will participate in three separate rounds of skimboarding. Judges will give each rider a point value after each round. This point value will be based on the rider’s performance in said round. The riders with the best total point value at the end of the three rounds advance to the semi finals. The semi finals runs in two heats, the top scoring riders move on to the finals. The Top three competitors win a staggered purse. For more infomation on judging and the contest format please click here.
